49-54 cm. Long and thick, black bill with yellow base and upturned at tip.
Black and white facial pattern, sandy-grey head and upperpart with narrow
blackish and whitish bands along lesser coverts, underpart whitish with
brownish-washed foreneck and breast. Infight, mostly grey greater covert,
black flight feathers, large white primary patches.

Formerly throughout along the large river in continental Thailand, now
mainly extinct, recent records are from Chaing Rai (Chiang Saen); Loei
(Chiang Kong); Ubon Ratchathani (Khemarat); and Samut Sakhon (Ban
Khalong).
