- 49-54 cm. Long and thick, black bill with yellow base and upturned at tip.
Black and white facial pattern, sandy-grey head and upperpart with narrow
blackish and whitish bands along lesser coverts, underpart whitish with
brownish-washed foreneck and breast. Infight, mostly grey greater covert,
black flight feathers, large white primary patches.

- Formerly throughout along the large river in continental Thailand, now
mainly extinct, recent records are from Chaing Rai (Chiang Saen); Loei
(Chiang Kong); Ubon Ratchathani (Khemarat); and Samut Sakhon (Ban
Khalong).
